WHAT DO X OR J WEIGHTS REPRESENT?
Abrasives are bonded to a backing material, which is classified by its thickness and flexibility using letters. Backings designated as 'A' are significantly more flexible than the sturdiest 'Y' weight backings found on our site. The 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D', 'E', and 'F' backings are all considered paper backings. 'E' and 'F' weights are often used for belt manufacturing due to their high durability, particularly in the wood industry, but they are still less robust than the full or partial synthetic backings like 'X' or 'Y' weights.
In metalworking applications, 'X' and 'Y' weight backings are commonly utilized. 'Y' weights are very durable and are generally made from full synthetic poly materials, while some 'X' weights are a blend of cotton and polyester, providing enhanced flexibility. The J Flex designation indicates an even more flexible backing material, which is frequently used without a contact wheel and allows for some slack in the belt, enabling it to gently adapt to curved surfaces and shapes (e.g. a wooden spoons, bowls, handles).
